Tomorrow (1/23): Public Lecture by Dr. Chris Vials, "Empire After Human Rights: The Transatlantic Right and Identitarian War"

Tomorrow, Thursday January 23, Dr. Chris Vials will give a public lecture,"Empire After Human Rights: The Transatlantic Right and Identitarian War." The lecture will take place in BUR 214 from 12:30 - 3:00 pm. From the event description: As an interdiscipline, American Studies has developed excellent critiques of Cold War and post-Cold War U.S. imperial modes that are grounded in human rights, multiculturalism, and liberal notions of belonging.  But to fully gauge the contours of American-made violence in the twenty-first century, both “foreign” and “domestic,” we also need to take more seriously contemporary imperial modes grounded in anti-liberal cultural logics.  To this end, this talk traces an emergent mode of white nationalist militarism that it calls identitarian war, which emerges not only from a domestic history of white supremacy and settler colonialism, but also from a recently intensified transatlantic dialogue with the European far right.  It follows this cultural mode through German philosopher Carl Schmitt, the identitarian movement, and finally through the film and graphic novel 300, a key source text for the transatlantic far right. For more information, visit the event page. We hope to see you there!
