This Thursday and Friday (1/29 & 1/31): Warfield Center Documentary Film Showcase

The Warfield Center will present its first Documentary Film Showcase, January 29 - 30 at the Glickman Conference Center. This UT AMS co-sponsored event will explore the relationship between film and activism in the diaspora.

The following directors will present their films:

Shola Lynch, UT alum and Curator of the Moving Image & Recorded Sound division of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. She will present her film, Free Angela and All Political Prisoners, which focuses on Angela Davis’s 1970 trial for murder.Matthew J. Smith, professor of Caribbean history and Director of the University College London’s Center for the Study of the Legacies of British Slave-Ownership. He will present his film, The Past is Not Our Future: Walter Rodney’s Student Years, which documents the early period of Walter Rodney’s life of activism.Wendi Moore-O’Neal and Ada McMahon will showcase their film, This Little Light: A Black Feminist Worker’s Story, which tells the story of Wendi Moore-O’Neal, a Black Feminist freedom singer who was fired from her community organizing job after marrying her wife.

The showcase will begin the morning of January 29 with a panel discussion with the directors about their approach to documentary filmmaking and documentaries as tools for activism, storytelling, and historical argumentation. Each film will be screened and followed by a 30-minute Q&A with each of the film’s director(s).
